Antique Mettlach Villeroy&Boch Beer Stein #1526/1074 PUG Swabian Farmer c. Made of pottery in PUG (print under glaze) technique unique to Mettlach. The stein depicts a man dressed like a typical farmer from Swabia smoking his pipe and thinking some heavy thoughts. There is a beer stein next to him and shot glass for some schnapps. The inscription reads: All mei Äckerle, all mei Wiese hent durchs Gürgele abe müsse. Hab noch e Äckerle in der Brach. Des muss auch de andere nach. All my small fields, all my meadows. Have now gone through the gullet. I have one field left out in the country. It will have to follow the others. The design was created by the most famous Mettlach designer – the prominent German artist – Heinrich Schlitt. He was the author of the most famous and beautiful Mettlach stein themes and designs. The lid is pewter – this is a standard Mettlach dome lid – very solid and classy. It sits tight on the handle – the Mettlach lids were always the best. The stein in excellent condition with no damage and clean interior without any discoloration so typical for PUG steins. The lid is sitting tight. Marked with Mettlach impressed mold number 1526 and decoration number 1074 along with the word “Geschutzt” – “protected” (in patent terms). There is also impressed date mark “03” for the year of 1903 according to Mettlach markings, and control number 26. This is a larger 1 Liter stein – much more rare than usual 0.5 liters.
